Every once in a while, an anime hits you with a truly character-defining moment. In the world of One Piece, there isn’t a moment that better represents Roranoa Zoro than the scene where he takes Luffy’s pain. After the events of Thriller Bark, the Straw Hats face total elimination by the sudden appearance of the Warlord, Bartholomew Kuma. In a show of devotion and loyalty to the future pirate king, Zoro offers Kuma his own head in exchange for the lives of his captain and crew. Surprisingly enough, Kuma agrees to spare the crew, but requires Zoro to take all of Luffy’s pain and fatigue into his own body. After Zoro plunges himself into a bubble of Luffy’s pain, Sanji eventually finds the swordsman barely conscious and standing in an enormous splatter of his own blood. This moment shows that Zoro is a true warrior who is willing to sacrifice himself for crew and captain. We’ll never forget the words Zoro uttered to Sanji when the cook asked about what transpired: “Nothing Happened.” These words are etched into our memories and are written next to Zoro on this design.
